Breathing the In-Between
Breathing the In-Between consists of a wearable, full-face paper mask accompanied by a video performance. The mask features delicate hand-cut paper floral and insect sculptures illuminated from within. At its center, a void opens to reveal a mini screen displaying nature imagery, such as a rising sun reflected on a lake with mountains in the background.
The mask is lit with LEDs that “breathe” in sync with the performer’s respiration. The accompanying video documents a dancer wearing the mask, where human breath, kinetic paper, light, and projected landscapes merge into a meditative, looping performance that explores the boundaries between body, technology, and nature.
The work is currently on view at the Ford Foundation Live Gallery in Manhattan, New York.
