2014, Tyvek Paper with Paint, appx 10 feet, 13 feet and 18 feet in length respectively; All three carp streamers are hand-carved out of Tyvek paper and later hand painted. It’s designed for Cherry Blossom Festival and inspired by the traditional carp streamers that Japanese people put on for children on a special holiday. I intend to make these large scale Asian Carp designed in an almost primitive style and in vivid colors so as to evoke childhood memories as viewer walk by them.
It’s inspired by architecture in Washington D.C., everything is folded into three layers of colorful paper curved in a wavy shapes, giving viewers new perspectives of the city of Washington DC. Four LED lights were installed on four corners of the base, casting shadows of the paper cutting architecture on another layer of paper, creating an interesting city skyline. There are pedestrians carved out of the green paper on the bottom, showcasing everyday life.
